Privacy Policy

The app has no accounts and no ads, and it doesn't track you. Your dinners are saved on your device. If you turn on household sync or join a voting room, the dinners in that household or room are stored on Google Firebase so everyone in it can see them. If you subscribe to Premium, Apple (on iPhone) or Google Play (on Android) handles payment directly — we never see your card details — and we use RevenueCat to check whether your subscription is active. This website collects only what you type into its forms.

Your dinner list, tags, prep times, notes, favorites, cooking history, weekly plan, photos, and settings are stored on your device. Photos you attach to a meal are never uploaded. They stay in your device's local storage, and the app only asks for photo or camera access when you choose to attach one.

The home screen widget and Siri read tonight's pick from storage shared with the app on your device. Reminders you turn on, including a household's daily vote reminder, are scheduled on each device. The app doesn't use push notifications.

If you use household sync or a voting room, the app stores the shared information in a Google Firebase Realtime Database. For household sync that is your dinner list (names, tags, prep times, notes, favorites, recipe links), your cooking history, tonight's pick, your weekly plan, the household's daily vote time, and its vote history: the meals in each household vote, who voted for which one, and any vetoes. For voting rooms it is the options, the names people enter to join, and their votes and vetoes. Photos are not included.

There are no accounts. A household or room is identified by a short code, and the names in a vote are whatever each person types when they join, such as a first name or a nickname. Anyone who has your code can view and change the shared list, so share it only with people you trust. We don't link this data to your name, email, or device.

Synced data is kept until it is removed. You can delete dinners in the app at any time. To have an entire household's synced data deleted, contact us with the household code.

When you import a recipe from a web address, by pasting a link or using the share sheet, the app contacts that website directly to read the page. If the page names another site where the written recipe is (for example, the site a Pinterest pin was saved from), the app reads that site too. Those websites can see the request, and their own privacy policies apply.

What's For Dinner Premium is an optional subscription, purchased and billed entirely through your Apple ID on iPhone, or your Google Play account on Android. Apple or Google handles your payment details — we never see or store them.

We use RevenueCat to keep track of whether your subscription is active. Apple or Google tells RevenueCat your subscription status and an anonymous device identifier; it doesn't include your name, email, or payment information. We use that status to unlock Premium features in the app. We also note which screen in the app led to a purchase, to learn which features people find worth paying for.

On iPhone, if you turn on Apple's Family Sharing for your subscription, your family group gets Premium access the way Apple designs Family Sharing to work — we don't separately manage or see who's in your family group.

You can cancel anytime from your Apple ID account settings on iPhone, or from Payments & subscriptions in the Google Play app on Android. Use Restore purchases in the app to get Premium back on a new device.

Contact form. If you send us a message, we collect the name, email address, topic, and message you enter, and store them so we can read and reply. We use them only for that, and we don't sell or share them. Ask us to delete yours at any time.

Buy Me a Coffee. The site links to a Buy Me a Coffee page if you'd like to leave a tip. We don't load any of their code on our pages. If you click through, you leave this site, and any tip is handled by them under their own privacy policy.

Dinner picker. The dinners you type into the picker on the home page or the dinner picker page stay in your browser. They aren't saved or sent to us.

Games. Our food games save your scores, streaks, in-progress puzzles, game settings, and any names you type into Dish Duty in your browser's local storage on your device. That information is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data erases it. Forehead Food reads your phone's motion sensor to notice tilts; those readings are used on your device during the round and are never saved or sent.

Printables. The weekly meal planner and grocery list save what you type in your browser's local storage on your device. That information is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data erases it.

Analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits to each page, and Umami to count a few actions: clicks on the App Store button, and when a game is started or finished. A game event also says whether this is the first day that game was played in your browser or a later visit. Your browser works that out from a date it keeps in local storage; only the label is sent, never the date. Neither service uses cookies, tracks you across sites, or builds a profile of you, and nothing you type in a game (guesses or names) is ever sent.

Hosting. The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) to run and secure the service.

Ads. Recipe pages, dinner idea pages, the dinner picker page, and the game pages may show ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, including ads based on your interests. You can manage this at Google's Ads Settings and learn more at how Google uses information from sites that use its services. The home, about, support, contact, and privacy pages don't show ads.

Google (Firebase, Google Play purchases, and AdSense on recipe and picker pages), Vercel, Umami (website analytics), Apple (App Store purchases), and RevenueCat (subscription status) process data on our behalf as described above. We don't sell your information or use it for advertising or profiling in the app.

What's For Dinner isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has sent us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

You can delete anything you've added in the app, and uninstalling the app erases what it stores on your device. For synced data, or for anything you've sent through this website, contact us and we'll delete it.

If we change how the app or site handles information, we'll update this page and the effective date above.
